International came in today and we now have the 4510 1 1/8 without faceplates. The left handed ones were marked with orange highlighter and the right handed with blue highlighter.

More importantly, the screws came separate from the faceplates so Garry has made two small boxes for the screws. Don't forget to add them when you combine faceplates with one of the units.

I'm not sure how Kyle wants to organize this section; but until he is in on Tuesday please be aware that there is stock without faceplates and they ARE marked. Thanks!

My expertise in creating the newsletter portion would be in the design aspect. If i can get "general" information to feature, as well as a special item and price for the item, I can create both written and visual forms of promotion. For example: "This month lets talk about how we fix key machines and what specific stock of LCN we are carrying an abundance of. Let's give a price of (insert price here) on 4041 DKB and AL." I would then compile flyers and do some online research on the products as well as figure target audiences for these products. Then I would write up a draft of the newsletter talking about how great Ed is with the machines and rough estimates of labor charges and such and then send it around to be prof read and added/subtracted to. This is what I'm thinking would be easiest for everyone; however what I think is easiest is of the least importance. So with that I think we need product ideas.

Anybody have an idea why so many exit devices that we sell end up being returned to us a few days later? This syndrome has been rearing it's head for decades at WHC !
March 19, 2008 @ 1:40pm
posted by
I think that it has to do with the fact that to install an exit device, it takes a little bit of skill. Most of the returns are from people who lack that skill. Along with the fact that some of these people don't want to measure for what they need, they just want to take something, figuring all the while that if it doesn't work out they'll just return it ! I believe that 90 % of the blame is on them. Another part is that when they tell us what they need, they don't always give us all the information or for that fact accurate information. These are my thoughts.
March 19, 2008 @ 2:39pm
posted by
Re: the exit device question

What Ed said has credence. At this point it can't be because of pricing. Maybe we should institute a policy of marking the box so in case it's returned we can determine if it came from us as opposed to a competitor. That worked before if I'm not mistaken.

This post is in regards to UPS shipping. Please make sure that the address that we are shipping to is correct. We should always ask where it should be shipped to, don't assume that it goes to the " Regular" place. Also make sure that you ask if the shipping location is Residential or Commercial, A Residential address adds $2.19 to the cost of shipping. If we get an address wrong, they charge us $6.00 to correct it. If the Package is 3 day ground, 2nd day air, or next day air the address correction charge is $10.00. So a great idea is to get it right from the start. It only takes a short time to verify this information, and is part of your job. Thank you.

I have been thinking about 2 different areas in which I think we can make Wacker run more efficiently.

I would like to explain these issues, and possible solutions, and let the management team discuss a proper remedy.

ISSUE #1

People not communicating when taking the last (or one of the last) products on the shelf.

This SHOULD be an easy thing to do; however sometimes in a rush to get things for a customer it can be easily forgotten.

Perhaps Post It Notes in the aisles to mark something in a temporary fashion could work? If the person forgets the Post It maybe someone else would at least see it.

Perhaps having a clipboard/notepad on each shelf for a quick note if you're in a hurry?

I'm sure there's a solution here. It just seems that, while it is the responsibility of the person ordering a line to do inventory, it is NOT possible to look at every item twice a week to make sure things are in stock.

I have been writing ANYTHING that may need to be ordered on people's lists. It may be a little annoying; but it's better to have too much information than not enough.

We should come up with a solution because I have noticed, more than I'd like to, that non-common STOCK items are being lined off because someone took the last one and since they didn't tell the person who orders the line it didn't end up on the incoming shipment.

This can cause situations where people have to "create" another order to get in a back ordered item when it could have been ordered with a previous stock order; had communication been better.

ISSUE #2

Who's on first base?

Who's job is it to stock the shelves? My understanding is that it is up to Don and myself to see items are running low and stock them (I'm not sure if anyone told Don that or not but i see him stocking now and again).

The only problem with this is, again, the communication.

I walked by the B560P's in 605 today and there were 3 on the shelf. I put up another box; however how was anyone to know they weren't stocked well?

Should we call over the P.A. when something needs to be stocked the same way we call orders?

If there so happens that there isn't overstock then we can be in charge of making sure it ends up on the purchaser's list?

This would come in handy for both Schlage and Don-Jo in particular.

In conclusion, those are my thoughts. If management would provide thoughts or solutions as to a new protocol for these situations it would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like the type of things we should be able to do having 2 and 1/2 "Piss Boys" on the payroll. (Garry is the 1/2 cause he's worth more than a piss boy)

Thanks!

The International DL-4510 1-1/32 and 1-1/8's have NO FACE PLATES anymore.

They are all "generic".

I marked them as to weather they are right or left handed but there is no more "AL" or "DU".

This was due to the fact people were requesting beveled face plates.

Make sure when you put a face plate inside the boxes you are sure there are screws in the package.

If there are no screws they are located in a box near the face plates in both AL and DU.

If there are any questions I'll be here.

Thanks, -Brad-

I'm pleased to see this forum used to kick ideas around...we need to use this vehicle frequently.

My thought is that no is ever too busy to write something on a list. If I take the last of something, or notice that something is low, I write it down, even if the customer has to wait 20 extra seconds, it gets done. This is not rocket science, it is just common sense. If we do not have it to sell because someone did not write it down, we all lose. I do not think post it notes, or clipboards in the aisles are the answer. Each individual that orders should have one central location for a list, and be responsible for that list with the Ilco blanks being an exception.

As far as overstock goes, there is not that much to deal with. Perhaps someone can look at the Schlage and LCN on a daily basis. In my opinion these are the only lines where the overstock may be in a "remote" location. As far as the Don Jo goes...look up^^^^. That has always been WHC policy.
April 2, 2008 @ 7:57am

Pursuant to Kyle's input...it seems like these recent "oversights" are not a "system" problem...but...rather...individual(s)not following the system. A possible fusion of these above thoughts is the use of a small personal note pad to remind yourself to do whatever it is that you don't think you have time to do THEN...but...if you have time to do that....you might as well take a few extra seconds and eliminate the intermediate step. :)

Bottom line...I think Brad is diplomatically expressing his frustration (that we all have on occasion) when we don't have popular items in stock. When that occurs there are often extenuating circumstances...then again....sometimes there are not. Let's all just try to pay attention to as many aspects of the business as we can and share our respective observations (like we are doing right now in this forum) and it can only help in the long run.

I hope everyone continues to use this forum to kick around thoughts like we just did. I don't want anyone to feel foolish and/or insulted if an idea might get rejected...taking the time to kick something around is a lot better than sitting around doing nothing.

I worked as a stock clerk / cashier at Jewel Food Store and one of our duties was to face the items on the shelf for display purposes and to figure out what items were running low or if items were sold out completely. We should indentify which 20 items are our best sellers.

We should determine what an ideal inventory level for the aforementioned should be.

We should determine (projecting lead times, etc) at what point we should RE-ORDER the item in question. We should then use an index card or some auxiliary aid to place on the shelf near the shelved inventory. (for example..220 LEE...a card that says "tell Ed when we only have 20 of these left.".

Something like this would help.

I think that the first issue is, who's responsibility is to make sure the shelf's are full. I think that should fall on the person that orders that line. We all are filling orders from time to time, look at the shelfs as you walk past them.
As for who puts the stock up on the shelf after that, it's up to that peoson to delegate the job in the approprately.

How about, when you see something is getting low, put a low stock note in the order basket at your desk. When the order filler sees the note, it's then taken care in the same fashion as a customers order is done.
April 2, 2008 @ 2:27pm
posted by
Maybe when the person who orders the line is checking inventory for a factory order, they could put the overstock on the shelf. If someone is filling an order and notices low stock, they could put it on the shelf if the order being filled isn't "hot".

I realize there are always instances where the above scenarios aren't possible due to time constraints, but enough people go to the different areas of the warehouse daily to facilitate the overstock making it's way from it's staging area to the shelf at some point.

Like Kyle said, "look up".

My feeling is that all members of the team have to be responsible for stock levels. Putting the onus exclusively on the individual that orders the line is not good for the team. I signed us up for a website that retrieves government bids in various selected categories.

After a few days of receiving the daily reports I have found this to be something of possible value to us.

I have neither the time nor knowledge/experience to attempt to follow up with all of these leads.

I figured that since the company is paying for this site, why not make it a company tool?

Here's how to use it...

1. Go to http://www.govcb.com

2. Type in Username: wackerhardware
Password: 1025westjackson

3. Press "Sign In"

4. Click on "E-Mail Report"

From there you should be able to scroll down to see the top 20 available bids relating to our "keywords".

Feel free to update our keywords as I used my best judgment when supplying them.

There are other various ways to look for opportunities on this site, however the "Daily E-Mail Reports" may be the easiest way to look at them.

If anyone decides to fill out a bid please let others know so we're not all filling out the same bids.

This week I will be working on a bid for "Granite School District" for a middle school there.

If you have any questions let me know.

This is a resource that can help us find new business; so I hope it goes to good use.

Thanks!!

Thanks, Ed...your initiative is admirable. I believe Charles Michalek recognized that attribute of your all the way back in 1984...and...I recall him saying that he "liked that". We should all follow your example. Let's leave no stone unturned. The best way to find out what is (or is NOT) going on is to "ask". This is a goofy business. For example, in February AAA Southport spends over $2,000.00 with us...in March they barely spend $200.00 ! Hard to figure.

Barry's main focus will henceforth be on the acquisition of NEW accounts. Brad will be assisting him in his various endeavors. Barry will only be in the regular sales rotation in the afternoon....he'll be spending his mornings concentrating on the aforementioned. In situations when we are shorthanded (due to illness or vacation) he will be more than happy to help out...however...he was not hired just to spread out the workload up front. His year of training is now completed...let's go to work...I want to see every month's net sales to begin with the numeral "3"...you guys will make a lot of money if (when?) that happens...and...we'll need NEW customers to accomplish that.

Those of you that are having your WHC email forwarded to AOL accounts pay close attention to this post! AOL servers are kicking back emails forwarded through the WHC server. This is an AOL issue, not a WHC issue, so it will be up to each of you to contact AOL and resolve the issue individually. I spent a significant amount of time communicating with Raul (Nathan's IT specialist) and he has explained to me that AOL continually blacklists servers for no apparent reason. He has tried several times to resolve these issues, but AOL is not cooperative because he is not the owner of the accounts in question. If you have an AOL account and want to continue receiving WHC email on that account, it will be up to you to contact AOL and explain to them that your mail is being forwarded from mail.wackerhardware.com through gramtel.net to your account. Your other options are to use the webmail, or collect your email using an email program such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc. Ed, your issue is a lazy server at Register.com. Your emails are being kicked back due to a server outage. In actuality, your email is outsourced through another server and that server is the issue. You probably eventually got Jason's email, as the kickback was not a fatal error, but a warning message. The bottom line here is forwarding email is not the best option...connecting to our server directly is the best way to go.

There seems to be some confusion over the thick door products for the Schlage B560 deadbolts so I will clarify this. There is NO 2-1/4" thick door package for the B560 series lock. The XB12-208 and XB12-209 part numbers listed on page B500-12 of the Schlage price list are for doors OVER 2-1/4" thick, and require the door thickness to be specified. Screws for the B560 series for 2-1/4" thick doors are listed on page B500-11. Tails for the B560 series for 2-1/4" thick doors are listed on page CYL-13. These parts must be purchased individually. Most of these parts are already in WHC stock. They are located in boxes in the area where the Schlage tails and screws are normally kept.

In the future I would like some one to carry the ball on this idea.

When we see that a vendor like LEE ELECTRIC is going to raise it's prices I think it would behoove us to:

(1) Determine who our most frequent customer-users are for the product(s).

(2) Call them to notify them of the imminent proce increase and ask them if they want to order some BEFORE the higher price takes effect.

This is a good move on several levels. It shows the customer that we are recogn1zant of their previous patronage and it also sends the message that "we are looking out for them".

I am always glad to furnish any data that you guys might require that can identify "who uses what" whenever you require it....just ask.

Thank you Mike, I agree 100% and I do try to do this. As this is a great way to increase sales. I this instance, we received the new price book when the new prices are already in effect, with no grace period. Some manufacturers try to be slick by doing this. But if we get advance notice that a price is going up, I think that it is a great idea to call the targeted customers. Thank you !

Agreed X 2. In fact, Ed and I were discussing something similar to this just a week or so ago. On top of targeting the frequent usage customers, we should probably mention any pending increases to customers as we see or talk to them just so they're not surprised when they see their receipt.

When there's a backorder written for a customer, I think we should make it practice to put their phone number on the ticket so they can be notified (and potentially "upsold") when the merchandise comes in. It seems that everyone does a good job of getting in contact with the customers in these cases, but sometimes tracking a phone number down after checking in the items can be difficult if it's not readily available on the ticket.

Please pay special attention to pricing for Schlage products in restricted keyways. Schlage has added an $8.40 list add on to all restricted key cylinders. This includes numbered sections, reverse sections, quad sections, and D family Everest sections. There is a notation in the cylinder sections regarding this. Also please note that the 40-100 cylinders are not available in restricted sections. You must use a cylinder product number for the lock that the cylinder is to be used in.

Those of you that are not completely familiar with Acrobat Reader and it's functions should start thinking about this now, because you will be married to the computer for your IR price books. I will add them to the documents section as soon as they are available. I have several things to say:

#1 - All Keying work is supposed to be cleared with me first so that I know
what is going on in the back. This process is not being adhered to. Please make whatever adjustments necessary to see that it is adhered to !

#2 - When keying work is presented to Gary or Don, there must be paperwork along with the keying work. Scrap pieces of paper or verbal orders just do not work and tend to leave a large margin of ERRORS. They have been instructed not to accept keying work without proper paperwork. To be in a hurry to take care of a customer is great, but this may lead to an error in the way the customer wants something done or rekeyed.
The best way to handle it write down what the customer wants on an order form, show it to the customer and have them verify their request and then submit the order. Thank you !

I general everyone has been doing a good job, but we need to do better !
Customers need to be acknowledged right away when they walk in the door, even if you are handling another customer it would be great to say, Sir someone will be right with you. We do not want anyone to feel ignored when they walk in the door. Shortly we will have people on the road telling our customers what a good job that we can do for them, keep this in mind when answering a call or talking care of a customer at the counter. Treat them respectfully and courteously, no one wants to be called STUPID or an IDIOT ! Also, keep in mind the UPSELL ! When a customer is picking up ask them if they need anything else, don't just give them the ticket to sign and they leave. The above topics are items that can be improved upon. The outside sales force will fail if the inside guys do not cooperate ! We all want to make more money ! Doing these few little things will put us on the road to accomplish this. I know that I can depend on all of you to pitch in and make this happen. Thank you in advance for your cooperation !
